Haridwar is situated in the plains of Uttarakhand and located in the foot hills of Shivalik ranges. From Haridwar the Ganga river starts it journey to the plane areas. Haridwar has an altitude of 250 meters (820 feet). Summer months are extremely hot and winters are very cold. 
The period from April to June or mid July is called as Summer season. The period from October to February is known as Winter season. The maximum temperature is 41 degrees C (106 F) and minimum 16 degrees (61 F) C during summer and maximum 18 degrees C (64 F) and minimum 4 degrees C (39 F) during winter. The best time to visit Haridwar is October to April. The time zone is +4.5 G.M.T. Haridwar is a religious and dry city, which does not permit the use of either alcohol or non-vegetarian food. 
 
Haridwar has been a source of Ayurvedic medicines since ages and has been providing herbal remedies. Haridwar is one of the first towns to be developed on Ganges edge It is still lush and green with forest and trees. With Rajaji Park in the vicinity, Haridwar has also been the destination for the wildlife and nature lovers. This city acquires a unique and unbeatable charm in the evening when thousands of Diyas and Marigold floating in the waters of Ganges at the Ghats.

MAIN FAMOUS PLACES IN HARIDWAR:  
 
Mansa Devi (3.5 kms.) : This temple is located on top of a hill called the Bilwa Parvat. The temple can be reached by a ropeway or via the normal trekking route to the top. The top of the hill provides a spectacular view of Haridwar. It is a Shrine dedicated to Mansa Devi, wife of the Nag King Vasuki. 
 
Maya Devi : It is one of the Shaktipeeths in India. This ancient temple of Maya Devi is also the presiding deity of Haridwar. It is said that when Lord Shiva was carrying his wife Sati, who had burnt her self to keep the honour of her husband, then the heart and navel of Sati had fallen at this place. 
 
Har Ki Pauri (1.5 Kms): This is sacred bathing ghat which is constructed of steps. It is one of the most historical and famous ghats in India. People say that Vikramaditya built this ghat in memory of his brother Bhartrihari. This ghat is also known as Brahmakund. In the evening a Maha Aarti is performed on this ghat. It is a sight to behold in the evening when hundreds of lighted Diyas are floated on the pure water of the Ganga.  
 
Chandi Devi (6 Kms) : Chandi temple is on the top of a hill called the Neel Parvat. It is on the other side of the river Ganga. The King of Kashmir, Suchat Singh, constructed the temple in 1929 AD. Chandi Devi is a three km trek from the Chandi Ghat. This place marks the spot where a demon was slain by goddess Chandi. There is a temple here that houses a statue placed by the great Hindu saint Adi Shankaracharya. 
 
Raksha Mahadev Temple (4 Kms.) : In a Kankhal town, this temple is a tribute to the legendary king Daksha Prajapati, father-in-law of Lord Shiva. As per the Hindu mythology, the king of this place performed a yajna. His daughter, Sati was married to Lord Shiva. But Daksha was not happy with this marriage and did not invite Shiva-Sati in that Yajna. But Sati came and was insulted by her father. She could not tolerate the insult and burnt herself in the yajna kund. On hearing this the followers of Shiva killed Daksha. But later Lord Shiva gave life to Daksha. The Daksha temple is an attribute to this legend. This place is one of the five sacred places in Haridwar
