History and Significance of Maha Kumbh Mela

Maha Kumbh Mela of Haridwar is the most Sacred astronomical event in Hindu religion. Millions of holy saints, monks and sadhus along with general public attend this spectacle of faith.

Four places of Kumbh Mela are associated to old times when Kalasha (pot) of nectar for immortality was recovered from the churning of primordial ocean for which a tensed war between Gods and Demons ensued.

As per Hindu tradition and history, Lord Brahma - God of creation gave some advice to the Gods to get rid of their weakness, caused during the creation of earth. Following the advice of Lord Brahma, the Gods began the task of churning the ocean in order to achieve Nectar (Amrit) from its water. As the task was very tough, God sought assistance of demons and made a deal with demons that they could have later half of the nectar that was to be obtained from churning of Ocean. The demons agreed to it.

When Gods became successful in procuring the nectar from the ocean, they tried to run away with nectar to secure it from demons, who were more powerful than Gods (Devatas). The safety of Nectar, to be procured from churning of ocean, was assigned to four Gods i.e. Brihaspati, Surya, Chandra and Shani who ran away with Amrit Kalasha (Nector Pot) to save it from demons.

After this conspiracy of Devatas was exposed, demons turned furious and chased those four Devatas (Gods) escaped with Nectar Pot. The chase lasted for 12 days and nights during which the Devatas and Asuras went round the earth. In this process, some drops of Amrit (Nector)  fell into the Holy River Ganga at Har Ki Paurhi in Haridwar followed by Sangam (confluence) of three Holy Rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati at Prayag (Allahabad), and Sacred Shipra River at Ujjain and finally the sacred Godawari River at Nasik of Maharashtra.

Kumbh Mela is celebrated to commemorate the holy event of the Amrit Kalasha that was placed at four different places viz. Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nasik. It is also believed that the waters of Holy Ganga turn into Nectar during the period of Kumbh Mela.
